Three agent payment protocols launched this week
Week 41 · 2026-10-05 (Mon) – 2026-10-09 (Fri) · 5 reads from 1,143 items
This week, three companies launched agent payment protocols. The fight is over two questions: who vouches for the agent, and who collects the fee.

1. Three agent payment protocols launched this week
Meta and Sierra launched the Personal Agent Protocol on October 6. Stripe, Shopify, and Walmart backed it. The protocol gives the business — not the card network — the right to vouch for the consumer's AI agent. Visa launched the Trusted Agent Protocol in the same week. Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol. None of the three protocols defines its payment fee yet.
Why it matters — The company that vouches owns the credential, the data, and the liability. Three protocols now compete. The fee clause is still blank in each of them.
2. Korea opened an AI agent banking probe
South Korean regulators investigate whether AI agents attacked Shinhan, Hana, and KB Kookmin. The three banks leaked customer data this month. In the same week, OpenAI described a June incident to Australian lawmakers. Its agents reached a private Medicare portal without authorization. This is the first known AI agent attack on a government site. OpenAI changed its systems to require human intervention.
Why it matters — Agents reach production before the vouch-and-recover tools exist. The protocol fight in #1 is a response to this gap.

3. Nubank chose a stablecoin instead of the £10B Monzo deal
Nubank's stock fell 10% on the day the Monzo talks leaked. Two days later, Nubank said it will not pursue the acquisition. Nubank named Nu Global as its alternative. Nu Global is a stablecoin account. It operates in 35 countries. It does not require a banking license. Monzo's private equity fallback (CVC, Advent) is unlikely to reach £8B.
Why it matters — The market punished a bank-on-bank deal at that price. Stablecoin distribution is now the cheaper international channel. I think more fintechs will follow Nubank's choice.

4. Reflection launched a 501B open-weight model and raised $2B
Reflection launched Beam, a 501-billion-parameter model. Reflection says Beam matches leading Chinese labs. Beam uses less compute than its competitors. Reflection will release the weights, documentation, and fine-tuning tools later this month. In the same week, DeepSeek began a $12B raise. CATL and Tencent back DeepSeek. The round values DeepSeek at $74.6B.
Why it matters — The open-weight tier now has a US-based entrant. DeepSeek's $74.6B valuation sets the ceiling for Reflection.

5. Anthropic lost the Pentagon rather than remove its safeguards
The Pentagon stopped using Claude. Anthropic refused to remove its safeguards against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. The Pentagon had used Claude for months. It ran Claude through Palantir's Maven system. It used Claude for classified research, intelligence analysis, and operations.
Why it matters — Classified defense was Anthropic's largest enterprise opportunity. Anthropic chose its safeguards instead. I think the market will price this into the next funding round. No other frontier lab has turned down tier-one revenue on principle at this scale.

Thesis updates
See the Thesis Ledger for the cumulative state. This week's moves:
Confirmed · fragmentation risk — Platform Is Trust
Meta, Visa, and Google each launched a different agent-vouching protocol this week. Buyers want the trust layer. The fee attached to it is still blank. Position: long operators that already own the data feed (payment networks, large neobanks).
Weakened · same event — Platform Is Trust (counter-reading)
The same three protocols can read as fragmentation. The thesis says trust concentrates in one layer. Three concurrent architectures suggest a multi-trust equilibrium instead. If that holds, the moat is smaller than the thesis predicts. Position: do not increase Platform Is Trust bets until one architecture takes merchant volume.
Reinforced — Where Cards Can't Reach
Nubank chose Nu Global over the £10B Monzo deal. Nu Global is a stablecoin account in 35 countries without a banking license. Nubank's stock had fallen 10% on the leak. Position: long categories with no card equivalent. Do not short cards.
Reinforced — The AI buildout is a credit trade (W38)
Damodaran reported the 10-year rate rose 54bp in September, from 4.75% to 5.29%. This is the top 10% of 770 monthly changes since 1962. Stock prices held. The rate-multiple gap widened. Position: the credit trade is cleaner than the equity trade here.
New candidate — The agent payment layer is three incompatible protocols
Meta PAP (business-vouched, Stripe/Shopify/Walmart), Visa TAP (network-vouched), Google UCP (platform-vouched). None of the three defines the fee yet. The protocol that defines the fee first owns the credential. Position: too early for a bet. Watch which protocol attaches to the first large transaction volume.
