Week 37 Digest — 2026

Week 37 · Reading Digest

2026-09-07 (Mon) – 2026-09-11 (Fri) · 1,362 items

A memory supplier capped its own prices and Morgan Stanley told clients to leave the chips. Both are calling the same ceiling.

Top reads

1. A supplier refused the shortage rent

Kioxia's average NAND price more than doubled, then rose another 70% in the June quarter; analysts model operating profit up more than 9x. CEO Hiroo Ota told staff not to push large increases and ruled out production ties with SK Hynix. Spot NAND is still +17.24% month over month.

Why it matters — A supplier throttling its own pricing power is forecasting the ceiling. It fears killing the AI capex that feeds it.

2. Core CPI beat and the next move is up

August headline CPI landed in line at 3.4% year over year and 0.4% monthly. Core came in at 0.3% against 0.2% expected. Gasoline drove it, with oil back above $100. Markets entered the print pricing roughly a 70% chance of a 25bp hike next week.

Why it matters — Most 2026 positioning assumed the next move was a cut. The direction of the argument just inverted.

3. Robinhood's chain earns; Coinbase's social app didn't

Robinhood Chain took $33 million in fees over 15 days, out-earning Solana and BNB Chain, and hit a record $6 million in a single day as DEX volume doubled. Bernstein sees 31% upside, StoneX 45%. The same week, Coinbase retired Base App and renamed it Coinbase Wallet.

Why it matters — The rail is the P&L. The social layer built on top of it was a feature nobody paid for.

4. The labs will sell the cure for the panic

Frontier models now find and patch vulnerabilities well enough that Modal uses them instead of external security consultants. OpenAI ran a dedicated cyber session for Astra; Nvidia's Huang called it the next big thing. OpenAI is past $40 billion in run rate, Anthropic reportedly $65 billion.

Why it matters — Coding revenue is maturing and the labs need a second category. Fear monetizes faster than anything else on the shelf.

5. Morgan Stanley moves the money from silicon to software

Seven MS teams argue capital rotates out of hardware, semis and memory into the enabler and software layer as 2028 capex growth slows. They stay long AMZN, META, GOOGL and MSFT. The mobile cycle ran the same order: chips, then infrastructure and devices, then software.

Why it matters — This is not a crash call. It is the end of the leg where owning the shovel was enough.

Thesis updates

Confirmed — The Ledger

Hanwha is building a tokenized securities platform on Avalanche as Korean rules take shape. SEBI's Demat 2.0 pilot opened with over $100 million in tokenized bonds. DBS and Citi settled a weekend USD payment via tokenized deposits. Nasdaq put $100 million into Kraken's parent for tokenized equity.

Clean evidence — What Survives

Coinbase folded its social experiment back into a wallet the same week Robinhood's chain out-earned Solana on fees. Value sat in the rail, not in the interface built on top of it.

Reinforced · Korea leg — Where Cards Can't Reach

The tokenized-securities venue is arriving in Korea before its won settlement rail. Hanwha builds on Avalanche; the cash leg is still unnamed. The thesis said the cash leg is a prerequisite, not an option.

New candidate — Korea sells the grid, not just the chip

KEPCO will spend ₩55.3 trillion on transmission and distribution through 2030, 9.6% above pre-megaproject plans. An AIDC special act is drafting power and permitting exemptions. Cable and turbine makers are exporting into the same shortage.
