Week 36 Digest — 2026
Week 36 · Reading Digest
2026-08-31 (Mon) – 2026-09-04 (Fri) · 1,309 items
The world's largest sovereign fund is selling Treasuries and Nvidia is buying a company with no revenue model. Both are defending a position.
Top reads
1. Nvidia paid $12.9B for a position, not a P&L
Hugging Face is the Schelling point of open-weight models — where GitHub sat a decade ago. Microsoft bought GitHub without a revenue case because developers mattered more than the multiple. Nvidia does not need Hugging Face to earn, or to force its chips on hosted models. Keeping the open ecosystem alive defends the long-run margin.
Why it matters — Buying the coordination point is cheaper than competing with it. The price was never about the asset's cash flows.

2. The most reliable Treasury buyer is quietly leaving
Norway's NBIM asked to cut the government-bond sub-index from 70% to 50% of its $2.3T portfolio: US Treasuries 34.1% → 21.9%, JGBs 4.6% → 7.4%, US non-government credit 16.2% → 27.6%. It also wants to weight sovereigns by market cap rather than GDP. Same week: JGB long rates crossed 3%, a 30-year high.
Why it matters — El-Erian's read is correct. The size is small; the signal that traditional holders are becoming unreliable is not.

3. Memory scarcity is becoming a line item in software pricing
HBM was 1% of DRAM bits in 2023 and reaches 11% by 2027 on UBS numbers — AI takes the wafer, phones and PCs get the remainder. The chain runs memory price → cloud price → software cost. Salesforce answered by repricing AI agents on outcomes: agent usage +97% QoQ, half of bookings from existing customers refilling credits.
Why it matters — Software's cost of goods stopped being zero. Seat pricing cannot absorb an input cost. Consumption pricing can.

4. Exchanges are wrapping equities in the crypto format
Coinbase asked the SEC to list 24/7 equity perpetuals. Kraken's parent will tokenize 100 London-listed stocks; ICE partnered with tZERO on tokenized-securities infrastructure; the SEC opened its 1970s transfer-agent rules to the blockchain age. Korea will tokenize "all types" of securities in three stages from 2027, settled onchain with stablecoins.
Why it matters — The demand was never for crypto assets. It was for continuous, leveraged, permissionless access — and that format is now being applied to stocks.

5. Retail speculation follows the law, not the asset
In July, Robinhood customers made 197 million event trades a day — mostly sports bets — against 4.8 million equity trades. It now earns more executing bets than stocks. In Europe, equities are ~20% of household wealth against ~50% in the US; payment for order flow is banned, UK stamp duty penalizes buying, and sports betting was always legal.
Why it matters — Where gambling is legal it absorbs the risk appetite. Prediction markets are not a new asset class; they are a redirection of an old one.

Thesis updates
Reinforced — The Ledger
Korea's three-stage plan tokenizes all securities from 2027 with onchain stablecoin settlement. ICE–tZERO, Kraken's 100 LSE stocks, Securitize–Socios, and the SEC's transfer-agent rewrite came the same week. Incumbents are adopting the rails, which is not the same as owning them.
Confirmed — Where Cards Can't Reach
Korea's stablecoin use case arrived exactly where the thesis said it would: settlement for an asset class that does not exist yet, not displacement of cards. Tokenized securities settled onchain is a not-yet-built category, and the won rail is being designed into it.
Confirmed — What Survives
Nvidia paid $12.9B for a company it does not need to monetize, to keep the open-model layer alive. Value polarized to the rails and to the coordination layer. The hosting business in between was the thing that got bought.
New candidate — The Compute Tax
Memory scarcity now propagates from wafer to cloud bill to software invoice. Salesforce moved to outcome pricing rather than eat it. If AI-era software carries a real marginal cost, gross-margin assumptions across SaaS need rewriting.
